Obituary for Paul Peter Shura

Beloved husband to Yvonne (nee Gustafson), the love of his life, for almost 65 years. Devoted father to Roxanne, Kevin, Darlene, Bryan and Jacquie and father-in-law to Rob, Greg, Liliya and Peter. Also treasured grandfather to Katy, Gillian, Cameron, David and Jeffrey.

Poppa was in many ways a complex man, but he was also a simple man with an incredibly loyal, noble and generous heart. He will always be remembered for his kindness, and for his love of family and community. The charities he supported number in the dozens. In the words of one friend, “He was the kindest man I ever met.” He took care of everyone.

When it came to his grandchildren, he surrendered his heart to them from the moment he first saw them. Who can forget the “hugging machine,” where he would hold them close and give them the biggest hugs ever! Poppa really came into his own as a grandfather – all play and no discipline. He tirelessly read his grandkids stories (Goodnight Moon), took them to the local playground, and taught them to ride their bikes and to skate. He also played with all the kids on the street. He had endless energy and was still roller-blading, skating and riding his bike well into his 80s!

Poppa was the last of his siblings and missed them greatly in the later years of his life. A special thank you to Dr. Grzeslo who kept him in such good health for so long. Our heartfelt gratitude also goes to Kamila, who loved and cared for him like her own father over these past few years. And our deepest thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at Post Inn Village, Oakville, and to Ewelina, Eugenia and Melissa from Right at Home, who also saw him through his final journey with Alzheimer’s.

Visitation will be held at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line, (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON, 905-632-3333, on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 7-9pm with vigil prayers at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Mary Mother of God Catholic Church (2745 N Ridge Trail, Oakville), on Wednesday August 7, 2019 at 10:30am. Reception to immediately follow the Mass. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul to The Willow Foundation-Post Inn Village, Oakville, Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Your labours are over now, Poppa. Rest in peace. To paraphrase from your favourite poem, “May your heart dance forever with the daffodils.”

A noble heart has passed.
